Where is my Mpan and MPRN number – 2023 energy bill update

What is an MPAN and MPRN number?

We should start of by defining what each of these numbers are, and what they mean.

MPAN stands for Meter Point Administration Number, and is exclusively linked to your electricity supply.

Confusingly, it is often referred to by other names – most commonly “Electricity Supply Number” or “S Number”.

This is just industry jargon and not something you need to panic about. The MPAN number is NOT the same as your customer reference number – this is a common mistake to make.

MPRN numbers are an entirely different thing all together – but should still not be confused with you customer reference number. MPRN stands for Meter Point Reference Number and is exclusively linked to your gas supplier.

Whats the difference between an MPAN and a Meter Serial Number?

They are vastly different. The Meter Serial Number (MSN) is a unique alphanumeric code used to identify your specific meter. You can typically locate the MSN on your meter box:

For standard meters, the MSN is commonly printed above or below the barcode and typically consists of nine to twelve digits. In the case of electricity meters, it often begins with the letter ‘F,’ while on gas meters, it usually starts with ‘L’ and ends with ‘M.’

On smart meters, you can find the MSN on the front of the meter box, next to the barcode. For electricity smart meters, the MSN usually commences with either 14P or 15P, and for gas smart meters, it starts with G4P.
